Buy it once. Own it.
No subscription for the tool. A writing tool lives on your machine and has no ongoing cost, so it shouldn’t carry a monthly bill. You pay once, and it’s yours.
Understory is free to download and use while it’s in alpha. If you’re in during alpha, your access carries forward when it leaves. The alpha still downloads under the old name, AxiomWeaver, while the rename is in progress.

A one-time purchase, owned permanently. macOS, Windows, and Linux. Sold through Paddle, our merchant of record, who handles the transaction and any sales tax or VAT. No renewal, no plan tiers.
What about everything else?
Big additions down the road, things like maps and the reader platform, will ship as optional expansions. Buy the ones that are useful to you, skip the ones that aren’t. If you’ve played an MMO, you already understand the model.
The one exception is the reader platform, when it ships. It carries a monthly fee, because serving your world to actual readers runs real infrastructure that costs money every month. You pay for that when you want it, and not before.
