Summary
Tiny Forest Labs never tracks you. Your data stays with you.
This policy covers all Tiny Forest Labs products: the Understory desktop app (macOS, Windows, Linux), the Attic home-documentation app (iOS and Android), and this website. We don’t run ads, we don’t track you, and we don’t sell your data. We don’t plan to start.
Studio-wide commitments
No tracking, ever
None of our products ship analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, or tracking of any kind. That applies now and to everything we build going forward.
We never sell your data
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for commercial purposes.
Platform-level diagnostics (Apple and Google)
Apple and Google each run platform-level diagnostic systems that exist outside any individual app. Apple delivers aggregate crash and usage reports to developers through App Store Connect, and Google delivers equivalent data through Android Vitals in the Play Console. Both share only anonymized, aggregated data, and individual users are never identified to us. On iOS this is collected only from people who turned on Share iPhone Analytics (in Settings, under Privacy and Security, Analytics and Improvements); on Android, only from people who allowed usage and diagnostics sharing with Google. Both are opt-in on your device, and you can turn them off at any time in your device settings.
Website (tinyforestlabs.com)
This website uses no analytics and no tracking scripts. It is hosted on Vercel. Vercel may log standard server-side request data (IP address, referrer) as part of their infrastructure, but we do not install any client-side tracking or measurement tools of our own.
Understory (macOS, Windows, Linux)
Your writing stays on your machine
Understory is a local-first desktop application. All your manuscripts, entities, world-building data, and notes are stored in a .weave file on your machine. This data is never transmitted to our servers or to any third party. No account is required to use the app.
No analytics or crash reporting
Understory ships no analytics or crash-reporting SDKs of its own. We do not track how you use the app.
Update checks
The app checks for updates on launch by requesting a version manifest from GitHub. This is a standard HTTPS request that contains no personal data.
Purchase
Understory is a $29.99 one-time purchase processed through Paddle, our payment provider. Paddle handles your payment details. We receive only a purchase confirmation; your card number and payment information are never visible to us.
Attic (iOS and Android)
Local by default
Attic is a home-documentation app. All your content, including rooms, items, photos, and notes, is stored locally on your device by default. No account is required to use the core app. Attic is a free download. A one-time $4.99 purchase unlocks the full record, and everything still lives on your device unless you turn on Share.
Attic Share (optional subscription)
If you subscribe to Attic Share ($2.99/mo or $19.99/yr), your content syncs to Supabase, our cloud backend, on servers in the United States. This makes your data available across your devices and lets you share it with others. Share requires an account, created with Sign in with Apple or Google Sign-In. We receive your account identifier and, depending on your choices at sign-in, your name and email address, used for authentication only. Your synced data is protected by per-user access controls. You control what is shared and with whom.
If you cancel Share
If you cancel Attic Share, the copy of your data on your device stays put and keeps working. Your synced cloud data remains on our servers until you ask us to delete it. To delete it, email support@tinyforestlabs.com.
Photos
Photos you add are stored the same way as everything else: locally on your device if you are not a Share subscriber, or in Supabase if you are. Attic only accesses photos you explicitly choose to add.
Purchases
In-app purchases and subscriptions are processed through the App Store and managed through RevenueCat, our purchase infrastructure provider. We and RevenueCat receive your purchase and subscription status so we can unlock the right features. Your payment card details are handled entirely by Apple and are never visible to us.
No analytics or crash reporting
Attic ships no analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting SDKs of its own. We don’t track how you use the app.
What we do not do
- •No analytics, no advertising, no tracking, now or later.
- •No selling or renting of your personal data.
- •No AI features that send your content to third parties.
- •No subscriptions required to use the core features of any product.
Your choices and rights
- •Your local data belongs to you. On Understory, it lives in a .weave file you control. On Attic, uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data on that device.
- •Delete cloud data (Attic Share subscribers): email support@tinyforestlabs.com and we will delete your account and all synced data.
- •Access your data: you can ask us what data we hold about you and request its deletion at any time by emailing support@tinyforestlabs.com.
Children
Our products are not directed to children under 13 and do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
We’ll update this policy as our products change and post the revised date at the top of this page.
